Universities in India That Provide Visa Support for International Students
Authored by Pratik Gandhi, International Student Advisor | Most recent update: May 18, 2026
Do universities help with visa?
Yes. Majority of Indian universities offer organized visa assistance to International students especially well-ranked public and private universities. However, visa assistance is different from issuing visa directly.

What universities typically provide:
- A formal acceptance or enrollment letter verifying your registration. This is mandatory for your visa application (Study in India).- Verification of documents in relation to their admission records. They identify discrepancies prior to your submission to the embassy.- Assistance with FRRO registration. This is required within 14 days of arrival if your visa is valid for over 180 days (MEA India).- A genuine certificate and commitment letters to expedite that registration.- Airport collection and short-term lodging at numerous organizations although this is optional and not a requirement.- A specialized International Students Cell serving as your contact point.
What universities do NOT do:
- Submit your application for a visa. You can accomplish this via Indian Visa Online or at your closest Indian mission.- Ensure acceptance. That decision lies with the embassy, considering your financial situation, academic history, and background.- Manage your financial documents, medical records, or passport affairs. This is the aspect that learners often overlook. I've observed applications hold up due to a discrepancy in the middle initial between the passport and the admission letter. A university's document verification is where its worth is realized. Identifying mistakes promptly conserves at least two weeks. In the worst case, you fail to attend the intake. The universities I’ve collaborated with each manage this in their own way.
Which universities provide visa support?
Different universities provide varying levels of visa support. Certain institutions have established International Students Cells staffed by individuals who have managed numerous cases. Some provide you with an acceptance letter and anticipate that you will work out everything else.
University Profiles
Public Universities
University of Delhi & University of Mumbai have official International Students Cells. They provide invitation letters, authenticate documents, and liaise with FRRO. Anticipate receiving admission letters within 5 days after confirming enrollment. Invitation letters will be sent within 3 days afterward.
IIT network (Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati, Roorkee). Every campus features an International Relations Office. IITs need notarized acceptance letters and financial verification before sending out invitation letters. This increases 7–10 days. This also implies a decrease in visa denials due to document inconsistencies.
Savitribai Phule Pune University also has a cell for international students. They issue admission letters, invitation letters, and coordinate hostel arrangements. Processing may take 7–10 days during high intake periods (July–August).
Private Universities
Amity University (campuses in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Pune, Mumbai) features a centralized team for International Admissions and Visa Assistance. They have a business-oriented strategy, with quick 2–3 day turnaround times. Adhere to their checklist exactly.
Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) operates International Student Services throughout its campuses. They manage visa paperwork, housing, and airport transportation. Their pre-departure materials are some of the most organized from a private university.
Shiv Nadar University features a committed team for International Student Services. They provide invitation letters, check documents, and offer guidance on FRRO. Standard processing: 3–5 days.
Ashoka University has an International Admissions Office. Turnarounds take 5–7 days. You can contact the office via email or phone.
Christ University (Bangalore, Delhi, Pune) operates a centralized International Students Office. I have directly collaborated with their campuses in Bangalore and Pune. Processing takes 3–5 days under normal intake conditions. It reaches 10 days during peak times.
There are many more public and private universities but I have focused only on the ones which are highly ranked with good student outcomes.

How long does an Indian student visa take to process?
The typical processing timeframe is 5–15 working days (Indian Visa Online). However, that only accounts for the duration your passport remains at the consulate. Do not plan your admission based on 5 day timeline. Additionally, also keep some buffer for rejections. Rejection rates generally range from 15–25% with primary reason being incomplete or contradictory documentation. This can be completely avoided. Candidates whose universities verify financial documents, acceptance letters, and transcripts experience rejection rates below 5% at schools with specialized international offices. That's the reason university-provided visa assistance is important. Anticipate a 6–10 week complete process when you take everything into account. Independent advice estimates the duration at 2–8 weeks (Qogent Global).
Phase 1: Pre-Application (Weeks 1–4)
Prior to filling out a visa application, you must have an official acceptance letter from an accredited institution. The official letter should have your complete name including middle name & initials. I have seen rejections due to a letter stating "Rajesh K. Sharma" while the passport showed "Rajesh Kumar Sharma.
You are also required to register on the Study in India (SII) portal (studyinindia.gov.in). This is required before any visa application can advance and is a mandatory step for everyone including Nepali students. Your passport needs to have a minimum of 6 months validity and 2 empty pages.
Phase 2: Visa Application (Weeks 5–7)
Utilize your SII ID along with the admission letter to submit an online application for the Student Visa (S-1). Simple cases are settled within 7–10 days. Anticipate 15 day timeline during the peak season of July to August. For some countries, the total waiting period may extend to nearly 8 weeks but I have not seen this for well equipped embassies such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, Dubai, Bangladesh. Submit in May or June if possible. **Avoid booking non-refundable flights until the visa is affixed in your passport.**Visa validity corresponds to your course length: maximum of 2 years for Master's programs, 3 years for research/PhD (IDP).
Phase 3: Post-Arrival (Within 14 Days)
Upon arrival, you must register with FRRO within 14 days if your visit lasts more than 180 days. It is completely conducted online through the e-FRRO portal and usually takes about 24 hours to process. Do not bypass it. All the universities I've collaborated with indicate students who fail to meet this deadline. It may prevent you from accessing a bank account or taking tests.
How to find and choose a university with strong visa support
Three non-negotiable things to check
- A committed, designated office. Seek out a particular ISC or International Students Registry that has a physical location, direct contact numbers, and identified personnel. Not a standard application form. Institutions listed above such as Mumbai University and Delhi Univeristy regard visa assistance as a priority, not a secondary concern. 2. FRRO support documented. The university is required to supply a signed FRRO Undertaking Letter along with a Bonafide Certificate. .3. Reactivity prior to registration. You should always do your own due diligence and the smartest way to do that is sending an email to the ISC of your dream university. Inquire: "Which documents are needed for FRRO registration, and what is the timeframe after arrival?" If the response is delayed or unclear, that office will be inaccessible during a visa emergency.
Questions to ask before you accept any offer
- Will you provide visa support letters in written form?
- Will you verify my documents prior to visa application?
- Will you issue the FRRO Undertaking Letter in 48 hours after arrival?
- Who is responsible for international student emails, and how long does it take to respond?
